Na anatomia, o endosteio é uma fina camada de tecido conjuntivo que alinha a superfície do tecido ósseo que forma a cavidade medular dos ossos longos. Esta superfície endosteal geralmente é reabsorvida durante longos períodos de desnutrição, resultando em menor espessura cortical. A superfície externa de um osso é revestida por uma fina camada de tecido conjuntivo que é muito semelhante em morfologia e função ao endosteio. É chamado de periosteum, ou a superfície periosteal. Durante o crescimento ósseo, a largura do osso aumenta à medida que os osteoblastos colocam tecido ósseo novo no perioste. Para evitar que o osso se torne desnecessariamente espesso, os osteoclastos retomam o osso do lado endosteal.
