Transformação de energia
A transformação de energia ou a conversão de energia é o processo de mudar uma forma de energia para outra. Na física, o termo energia descreve a capacidade de produzir certas mudanças dentro de um sistema, sem considerar limitações de transformação impostas. As mudanças na energia total dos sistemas só podem ser realizadas adicionando ou removendo energia a partir delas, pois a energia é uma quantidade que é conservada, como afirma a primeira lei da termodinâmica. A equivalência de energia em massa, que decorre da relatividade especial, diz que as mudanças na energia dos sistemas também coincidem com as mudanças na massa do sistema e a massa de um sistema é uma medida do seu conteúdo energético. A energia em muitas das suas formas pode ser usada em processos naturais, ou para prestar algum serviço à sociedade, como aquecimento, refrigeração, luz ou operação mecânica para operar máquinas. Por exemplo, um motor de combustão interna converte a energia química potencial em gasolina e oxigênio em energia térmica que, ao causar pressão e realizar trabalhos nos pistões, é transformada em energia mecânica que acelera o veículo.
