Intervalo de banda
Na física de estado sólido, um intervalo de banda, também chamado de espaço de energia ou bandgap, é uma faixa de energia em um sólido onde nenhum estado de elétrons pode existir. Em gráficos da estrutura de banda eletrônica de sólidos, o intervalo de banda geralmente se refere à diferença de energia entre o topo da banda de valência e a parte inferior da banda de condução em isoladores e semicondutores. Isto é equivalente à energia necessária para liberar um elétron de concha exterior a partir de sua órbita em torno do núcleo para se tornar um transportador de carga móvel, capaz de se mover livremente dentro do material sólido, de modo que o intervalo de banda é um fator importante que determina a condutividade elétrica de um sólido . As substâncias com fendas de banda larga são geralmente isolantes, aqueles com fendas de banda menores são semicondutores, enquanto que os condutores possuem fendas de banda muito pequenas ou nenhum, porque as bandas de valência e de condução se sobrepõem.
