Plasmídeo
Um plasmídeo é uma pequena molécula de DNA que é fisicamente separada e pode replicar independentemente do DNA cromossômico dentro de uma célula. Mais comumente encontrados como pequenas moléculas circulares de ADN de cadeia dupla em bactérias, os plasmídeos às vezes estão presentes em arqueias e organismos eucarióticos. Na natureza, os plasmídeos carregam genes que podem beneficiar a sobrevivência do organismo, e podem ser freqüentemente transmitidos de uma bactéria para outra via transferência horizontal de genes. Os plasmídeos artificiais são amplamente utilizados como vetores na clonagem molecular, servindo para impulsionar a replicação de sequências de DNA recombinante dentro dos organismos hospedeiros. O termo plasmídeo foi introduzido pela primeira vez pelo biólogo molecular americano Joshua Lederberg em 1952. Os tamanhos de plasmídeo variam de 1 a mais de 1000 kbp. O número de plasmídeos idênticos em uma única célula pode variar entre um a milhares em algumas circunstâncias. Os plasmídeos podem ser encontrados em todos os três principais domínios: Archaea, bactérias e Eukarya. Os plasmídeos são considerados replicões, capazes de replicar de forma autônoma dentro de um hospedeiro adequado. Contudo, os plasmídeos, como os vírus, não são considerados por alguns como uma forma de vida.
