O QUE SIGNIFICA EUROPEAN ECONOMIC AREA EM INGLÊS
Área Economica Européia
O Espaço Económico Europeu compreende três dos quatro estados membros da Associação Europeia de Comércio Livre e 27 dos 28 Estados membros da União Europeia, com a Croácia aplicando provisoriamente o acordo até a sua ratificação por todos os países do EEE. Estabeleceu-se em 1 de Janeiro de 1994 na sequência de um acordo com a Comunidade Europeia. Permite aos Estados da EFTA-EEE participarem no mercado interno da UE sem serem membros da UE. Adotam quase todas as leis da UE relacionadas com o mercado único, com exceção das leis sobre agricultura e pescarias. No entanto, eles também contribuem e influenciam a formação de novas políticas e legislação relevantes do EEE em um estágio inicial como parte de um processo formal de decisão. Além disso, a independência e a participação direta de organismos internacionais por direito próprio significam que os países podem participar e se tornarem signatários de várias convenções, como a Convenção de Basileia de 1992, que só são adotadas pela UE muitos anos depois. Um membro da EFTA, na Suíça, não se juntou ao EEE, mas tem uma série de acordos bilaterais, incluindo um acordo de livre comércio, com a UE.
