O Comité Europeu de Normalização é uma organização sem fins lucrativos cuja missão é promover a economia europeia no comércio global, o bem-estar dos cidadãos europeus e do meio ambiente, proporcionando uma infra-estrutura eficiente às partes interessadas para o desenvolvimento, manutenção e distribuição de conjuntos coerentes de padrões e especificações. O CEN foi fundado em 1961. Os seus trinta membros nacionais trabalham em conjunto para desenvolver padrões europeus em vários setores para construir um mercado interno europeu de bens e serviços e posicionar a Europa na economia global. O CEN é oficialmente reconhecido como um organismo de normalização europeu pela União Europeia; Os outros organismos oficiais de normalização europeus são o Comité Europeu de Normalização Electrotécnica e o Instituto Europeu de Normas de Telecomunicações. Mais de 60.000 especialistas técnicos, bem como federações empresariais, consumidores e outras organizações de interesse social estão envolvidos na rede CEN que atinge mais de 460 milhões de pessoas. O CEN é o representante oficialmente reconhecido de padronização para setores que não sejam eletrotécnicos e telecomunicações.
