Valor esperado
Na teoria da probabilidade, o valor esperado se refere, intuitivamente, ao valor de uma variável aleatória, "esperaria" encontrar se se pudesse repetir o processo variável aleatório num número infinito de vezes e tomar a média dos valores obtidos. Mais formalmente, o valor esperado é uma média ponderada de todos os valores possíveis. Em outras palavras, cada valor possível que a variável aleatória pode assumir é multiplicado pelo peso atribuído, e os produtos resultantes são então adicionados em conjunto para encontrar o valor esperado. Os pesos utilizados na computação desta média são as probabilidades no caso de uma variável aleatória discreta, ou os valores de uma função de densidade de probabilidade no caso de uma variável aleatória contínua. Do ponto de vista teórico rigoroso, o valor esperado de uma variável contínua é a integral da variável aleatória em relação à sua medida de probabilidade. Uma vez que a probabilidade nunca pode ser negativa, o valor esperado é proporcional à área sob a curva do gráfico dos valores de uma variável aleatória multiplicada pela probabilidade desse valor. Assim, para uma variável aleatória contínua, o valor esperado é o limite da soma ponderada, isto é, a integral.
