O Facebook é um serviço de rede social online com sede em Menlo Park, Califórnia. Seu nome vem de um coloquialismo para o diretório dado a estudantes em algumas universidades americanas. O Facebook foi fundado em 4 de fevereiro de 2004, por Mark Zuckerberg, com colegas de quarto da faculdade e colegas estudantes da Universidade Harvard Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz e Chris Hughes. Os fundadores inicialmente limitaram a adesão do site aos estudantes de Harvard, mas depois o expandiram para faculdades na área de Boston, Ivy League e Universidade de Stanford.
