Fricativas são consoantes produzidas por forçar o ar através de um canal estreito feito colocando dois articuladores juntos. Estes podem ser o lábio inferior contra os dentes superiores, no caso de; a parte de trás da língua contra o palato macio, no caso do alemão, a consoante final de Bach; ou o lado da língua contra os molares, no caso de galês, aparecendo duas vezes no nome de Llanelli. Este fluxo de ar turbulento é chamado de fricção. Um subconjunto particular de fricativas são as sibilantes. Ao formar uma sibilante, um ainda está forçando o ar através de um canal estreito, mas, além disso, a língua é enrolada longitudinalmente para direcionar o ar sobre a borda dos dentes.
