Astronomia de raios-gama
Astronomia de raios-gama é a observação astronômica de raios gama, a radiação eletromagnética de forma mais energética com energias de fótons acima de 100 keV. A radiação abaixo de 100 keV é classificada como raio X e é objeto de astronomia de raios-X. A literatura astronômica geralmente divide o "raio-gama" quando usado como um adjetivo, mas para usar "raio gama" sem um hífen para o substantivo. Os raios gama na gama MeV são gerados em chamas solares, mas os raios gama na gama GeV não se originam em nosso sistema solar e são importantes no estudo da astronomia extra-solar e especialmente extra-galáctica. Os mecanismos que emitem raios gama são diversos, principalmente idênticos aos que emitem raios-X, mas em energias superiores, incluindo a aniquilação eletrônico-positônico, o efeito Inverse Compton e, em alguns casos, também a decomposição de material radioativo no espaço, refletindo eventos extremos como supernovas e hipernovas, e o comportamento da matéria em condições extremas, como em pulsares e blazers. As energias de fótons mais altas medidas até o momento estão na faixa de TeV, sendo o registro realizado por uma "explosão extraordinária" de Blazar Markarian 501 em 1997, produzindo fótons com até 16 TeV.
