Engenharia genética
A engenharia genética, também chamada de modificação genética, é a manipulação direta do genoma de um organismo usando biotecnologia. Um novo DNA pode ser inserido no genoma hospedeiro primeiro isolando e copiando o material genético de interesse usando métodos de clonagem molecular para gerar uma sequência de DNA, ou por síntese do DNA, e depois inserindo essa construção no organismo hospedeiro. Os genes podem ser removidos, ou "nocauteados", usando uma nuclease. A segmentação de genes é uma técnica diferente que usa recombinação homóloga para mudar um gene endógeno e pode ser usada para excluir um gene, remover exões, adicionar um gene ou introduzir mutações pontuais. Um organismo que é gerado através de engenharia genética é considerado um organismo geneticamente modificado. Os primeiros OGMs foram bactérias em 1973 e os ratos GM foram gerados em 1974. As bactérias produtoras de insulina foram comercializadas em 1982 e alimentos geneticamente modificados foram vendidos desde 1994. O Glofish, o primeiro OGM projetado como animal de estimação, foi vendido pela primeira vez nos Estados Unidos Dezembro de 2003. As técnicas de engenharia genética foram aplicadas em vários campos, incluindo pesquisa, agricultura, biotecnologia industrial e medicina.
