Corrente geostrófica
Uma corrente geostrófica é um fluxo oceânico em que a força do gradiente de pressão é equilibrada pelo efeito de Coriolis. A direção do fluxo geostrófico é paralela às isobares, com a alta pressão à direita do fluxo no Hemisfério Norte e a alta pressão para a esquerda no Hemisfério Sul. Este conceito é familiar dos mapas do tempo, cujas isobares mostram a direção do fluxo geostrófico na atmosfera. O fluxo geostrófico pode ser barotrópico ou baroclínico. Uma corrente geostrófica também pode ser pensada como uma onda rotativa de água rasa com uma freqüência de zero. O princípio da geotrofia é útil para os oceanógrafos porque permite que eles inferam as correntes oceânicas das medidas da altura da superfície do mar ou dos perfis verticais da densidade da água do mar captada pelos navios ou pelas bóias autônomas. As principais correntes dos oceanos do mundo, como o Gulf Stream, a corrente de Kuroshio, a Corrente de Agulhas e a Corrente circumpolar antártica, são todas aproximadamente em equilíbrio geostrófico e são exemplos de correntes geostróficas.
