Efeito estufa
O efeito estufa é um processo pelo qual a radiação térmica de uma superfície planetária é absorvida pelos gases atmosféricos do efeito estufa e é re-irradiada em todas as direções. Uma vez que parte desta re-radiação está voltada para a superfície e a atmosfera inferior, resulta em uma elevação da temperatura média da superfície acima do que seria na ausência dos gases. A radiação solar nas freqüências da luz visível passa em grande parte pela atmosfera para aquecer a superfície planetária, que então emite essa energia nas freqüências mais baixas da radiação térmica infravermelha. A radiação infravermelha é absorvida por gases de efeito estufa, que por sua vez re-irradiam grande parte da energia para a superfície e baixa atmosfera. O mecanismo tem o nome do efeito da radiação solar que passa através do vidro e aquece uma estufa, mas a forma como ele retém o calor é fundamentalmente diferente, pois uma estufa funciona reduzindo o fluxo de ar, isolando o ar quente dentro da estrutura de modo que o calor não seja perdido por convecção . Se um corpo negro termicamente condutor ideal fosse a mesma distância do Sol que a Terra, ela teria uma temperatura de cerca de 5,3 ° C.
