Doença das mãos e da boca é uma síndrome humana causada por vírus intestinais da família picornaviridae. Coxsackievirus A16 e Enterovirus 71 são as cepas mais conhecidas que causam HFMD, mas muitas outras cepas de coxsackievirus ou enterovírus são conhecidas por causar esta síndrome viral. HFMD é uma infecção viral comum e altamente contagiosa que tipicamente causa uma doença febril leve seguida por uma erupção maculopapular que pode envolver a pele das mãos, pés e cavidade oral. HFMD é bastante comum e geralmente afeta crianças e crianças, mas pode afetar adultos imunocompetentes na ocasião. Os vírus que causam HFMD são espalhados pelo contato direto com muco, saliva ou fezes de uma pessoa infectada. HFMD geralmente ocorre em pequenas epidemias em creches ou jardins de infância, geralmente durante os meses de verão e outono. O período de incubação usual é de 3-6 dias. A HFMD não deve ser confundida com a febre aftosa, uma doença viral distinta que afeta ovelhas, bovinos e suínos, mas a transmissão para humanos é excepcionalmente rara. A maioria dos casos da síndrome desaparece por conta própria e não requer tratamento além de proporcionar alívio sintomático.
