Heliômetro
Heliômetro é um instrumento originalmente projetado para medir a variação do diâmetro do sol em diferentes estações do ano, mas aplicado agora à forma moderna do instrumento, que é capaz de um uso muito mais amplo. O conceito básico é introduzir um elemento dividido no caminho óptico de um telescópio, de modo a produzir uma imagem dupla. Se um elemento for movido usando um micrómetro de parafuso, podem ser feitas medidas de ângulo precisas. O arranjo mais simples é dividir a lente do objeto pela metade; com uma meia fixada e outra presa ao parafuso micrométrico e deslizou ao longo do diâmetro do corte. Para medir o diâmetro do sol, por exemplo, o micrômetro é ajustado para que as duas imagens do disco solar apenas se toquem. Da mesma forma, uma medida precisa da separação aparente entre duas estrelas próximas, A e B, é feita ajustando a imagem dupla para que A em uma imagem toque B na outra.
