Alkane
Na química orgânica, um alcano ou parafina é um hidrocarboneto saturado. Os alcanes consistem apenas em átomos de hidrogênio e carbono e todas as ligações são ligações simples. Uma série de átomos de carbono ligados é conhecido como o esqueleto de carbono ou estrutura de carbono. O número de átomos de carbono é usado para definir o tamanho do alcano. Um grupo alquilo, geralmente abreviado com o símbolo R, é um grupo funcional ou cadeia lateral que, como um alcano, consiste unicamente em átomos de carbono e hidrogênio de ligação simples, por exemplo, um grupo metilo ou etilo. O alcano mais simples possível é o metano, CH4. Não há limite para o número de átomos de carbono que podem ser ligados entre si, sendo a única limitação que a molécula é acíclica, está saturada e é um hidrocarboneto.
