Contrato de compra é o termo legal para um contrato, no qual um comprador concorda em pagar por bens em partes ou por uma porcentagem ao longo de vários meses. No Canadá e nos Estados Unidos, uma compra de aluguel é denominada um plano de parcelamento, embora estes possam diferir ligeiramente, como em um contrato de compra e venda, a propriedade do bem permanece com o vendedor até o último pagamento. Outras práticas análogas são descritas como arrendamento fechado ou aluguel para possuir. O contrato de compra de aluguel foi desenvolvido no Reino Unido no século 19 para permitir que os clientes com escassez de dinheiro fizessem uma compra cara que de outra forma deveriam atrasar ou renunciar. Por exemplo, nos casos em que um comprador não pode pagar o preço solicitado por um item de propriedade como um montante fixo, mas pode pagar uma porcentagem como um depósito, um contrato de compra e venda permite ao comprador contratar os bens por um aluguel mensal . Quando um montante igual ao preço total original acrescido de juros foi pago em parcelas iguais, o comprador pode então exercer uma opção para comprar os bens a um preço predeterminado ou devolver a mercadoria ao proprietário.
