No total, existem 182 espécies em 42 gêneros, aproximadamente a metade delas nativas da Austrália, muitas das quais ocupam Nova Guiné. Com seus parentes mais próximos, os Maluridae, Pardalotidae e Acanthizidae, eles compõem a superfamília Meliphagoidea e originaram-se no início da história evolutiva da radiação passerina oscina. Embora os melhores olhem e se comportem muito como outros paserizadores de alimentação de néctar ao redor do mundo, eles não estão relacionados e as semelhanças são conseqüência da evolução convergente.
