Hookworm é um nematóide parasita que vive no intestino delgado de seu hospedeiro, que pode ser um mamífero como um cão, gato ou humano. Duas espécies de ancilostomídeos comumente infectam humanos, Ancylostoma duodenale e Necator americanus. A. duodenale predomina no Oriente Médio, Norte da África, Índia e no sul da Europa, enquanto N. americanus predomina nas Américas, África Subsaariana, Sudeste Asiático, China e Indonésia. As espécies A. braziliense e A. tubaeforme infectam gatos, enquanto A. caninum infecta caninos. Uncinaria stenocephala infecta cães e gatos. A. caninum infectou humanos, com 150 casos relatados em Brisbane, Austrália, de 1988 a 1992. Os glicose são muito menores do que o gueixa gigante, e as complicações da migração tecidual e obstrução mecânica, tão freqüentemente observadas com a infestação de lombar, são menos freqüentes na infestação de ancilostomíase. O risco mais significativo de infecção por ancilostomíase é a anemia, secundária à perda de ferro no intestino. Os vermes sugam sangue vorazmente e danificam a mucosa. No entanto, a perda de sangue nas fezes não é visivelmente aparente.
