Hypersthene
O hiperseno é um mineral de inosilicato comum que forma a rocha pertencente ao grupo de piroxenos ortorrômicos. Muitas referências abandonaram formalmente este termo, preferindo classificar este mineral como enstatite ou ferrosilite. Encontra-se em rochas ígneas e algumas rochas metamórficas, bem como em meteoritos de pedra e ferro. Forja uma série de soluções sólidas com os minerais enstatite e ferrosilite, sendo um membro intermediário entre os dois. O enstatite puro não contém ferro, enquanto a ferrosilita pura não contém magnésio; hypersthene é o nome dado ao mineral quando uma quantidade significativa de ambos os elementos estão presentes. A fórmula química é SiO3. Os cristais desenvolvidos distintamente são raros, sendo o mineral geralmente encontrado como massas foliadas embutidas nas rochas ígneas norite e hypersthene-andesite, das quais forma um constituinte essencial. A labradorita de grosseira-hiperesthene-rock da ilha de Paul, ao largo da costa de Labrador, forneceu o material mais típico; e por este motivo o mineral é conhecido como Labrador Hornblende ou Paulite. A cor é muitas vezes cinza, marrom ou verde, e o brilho geralmente é vítreo a perolado.
