Indexação
A indexação é uma técnica para ajustar os pagamentos de renda por meio de um índice de preços, a fim de manter o poder de compra do público após a inflação, enquanto a Deindexação se refere ao desenrolar da indexação. Do ponto de vista macroeconômico, existem quatro categorias principais de indexação: indexação salarial, indexação da taxa de instrumentos financeiros, indexação da taxa de imposto e indexação da taxa de câmbio. Os três primeiros estão indexados à inflação. O último é tipicamente indexado a uma moeda estrangeira, principalmente o dólar dos EUA. Qualquer um desses tipos de indexação pode ser revertido. A aplicação de uma cláusula COLA de escalonamento de vida a um fluxo de pagamentos periódicos protege o valor real desses pagamentos e efetivamente transfere o risco de inflação do beneficiário para o pagador, que deve pagar mais a cada ano para refletir os aumentos nos preços. Assim, a indexação da inflação é frequentemente aplicada aos pagamentos de pensões, aluguéis e outras situações que não estão sujeitas a reavaliação regular no mercado. COLA não é CPI, que é um indicador agregado.
