Em todos os campos relacionados com a interatividade, incluindo ciência da informação, informática, interação homem-computador, comunicação e design industrial, há pouco acordo sobre o significado do termo interatividade. Existem várias visualizações sobre a interatividade. Na "visão de contingência" da interatividade, existem três níveis: ▪ Não interativo, quando uma mensagem não está relacionada a mensagens anteriores; ▪ Reativo, quando uma mensagem está relacionada apenas com uma mensagem imediatamente anterior; e ▪ Interativo, quando uma mensagem está relacionada a uma série de mensagens anteriores e à relação entre elas. Um conjunto de pesquisas fez uma forte distinção entre interação e interatividade. Como o sufixo 'ity' é usado para formar substantivos que denotam uma qualidade ou condição, esse corpo de pesquisa definiu a interatividade como a "qualidade ou condição de interação". Esses pesquisadores sugerem que a distinção entre interação e interatividade é importante, uma vez que a interação pode estar presente em qualquer configuração, mas a qualidade da interação varia de baixo e alto.
