Intercropping é a prática de cultivar duas ou mais culturas próximas. O objetivo mais comum de intercalar é produzir um maior rendimento em um determinado terreno, fazendo uso de recursos que de outra forma não seriam utilizados por uma única cultura. É necessário um planejamento cuidadoso, levando em consideração o solo, o clima, as culturas e as variedades. É particularmente importante não ter culturas concorrentes entre si para o espaço físico, nutrientes, água ou luz solar. Exemplos de estratégias de intercalação estão plantando uma cultura de raízes profundas com uma cultura de raízes rasas ou plantando uma colheita alta com uma cultura mais curta que requer sombra parcial. O cultivo de beco Inga foi proposto como uma alternativa à destruição ecológica da agricultura de corte e queima. Quando as culturas são cuidadosamente selecionadas, outros benefícios agronômicos também são alcançados. Intercropping is the practice of growing two or more crops in proximity. The most common goal of intercropping is to produce a greater yield on a given piece of land by making use of resources that would otherwise not be utilized by a single crop. Careful planning is required, taking into account the soil, climate, crops, and varieties. It is particularly important not to have crops competing with each other for physical space, nutrients, water, or sunlight. Examples of intercropping strategies are planting a deep-rooted crop with a shallow-rooted crop, or planting a tall crop with a shorter crop that requires partial shade. Inga alley cropping has been proposed as an alternative to the ecological destruction of slash-and-burn farming. When crops are carefully selected, other agronomic benefits are also achieved. Lodging-prone plants, those that are prone to tip over in wind or heavy rain, may be given structural support by their companion crop. Creepers can also benefit from structural support. Some plants are used to suppress weeds or provide nutrients. Delicate or light-sensitive plants may be given shade or protection, or otherwise wasted space can be utilized.
