Frequência intermediária
Nas comunicações e na engenharia eletrônica, uma freqüência intermediária é uma freqüência à qual a freqüência portadora é deslocada como um passo intermediário na transmissão ou recepção. A freqüência intermediária é criada misturando o sinal de portadora com um sinal de oscilador local em um processo chamado heterodificação, resultando em um sinal na diferença ou freqüência de batimento. Freqüências intermediárias são usadas em receptores de rádio superheterodin, em que um sinal de entrada é deslocado para um IF para amplificação antes da detecção final é feita. A conversão para uma freqüência intermediária é útil por vários motivos. Quando vários estágios de filtros são usados, todos podem ser configurados para uma freqüência fixa, o que os torna mais fáceis de construir e sintonizar. Os transistores de baixa freqüência geralmente têm maiores ganhos, portanto, menos etapas são necessárias. É mais fácil fazer filtros nitidamente seletivos em frequências fixas mais baixas.
