Intermodulação
A distorção de intermodulação ou intermodulação é a modulação de amplitude de sinais que contêm duas ou mais freqüências diferentes em um sistema com não-linearidades. A intermodulação entre cada componente de freqüência formará sinais adicionais em freqüências que não são apenas em freqüências harmônicas de qualquer um, mas também nas freqüências de soma e diferença das freqüências originais e em múltiplos dessas frequências de soma e diferença. A intermodulação é causada pelo comportamento não-linear do processamento de sinal que está sendo usado. O resultado teórico dessas não-linearidades pode ser calculado gerando uma série de Volterra da característica, enquanto a aproximação usual dessas não-linearidades é obtida pela geração de uma série de Taylor. A intermodulação raramente é desejável no processamento de rádio ou áudio, pois cria emissões espúrias indesejadas, muitas vezes sob a forma de bandas laterais. Para transmissões de rádio, isso aumenta a largura de banda ocupada, levando a interferências de canais adjacentes, o que pode reduzir a clareza de áudio ou aumentar o uso do espectro.
