Uma linha de contorno de uma função de duas variáveis é uma curva ao longo da qual a função tem um valor constante. Na cartografia, uma linha de contorno junta pontos de igual elevação acima de um determinado nível, como o nível médio do mar. Um mapa de contorno é um mapa ilustrado com linhas de contorno, por exemplo, um mapa topográfico, que assim mostra vales e colinas, e a inclinação das encostas. O intervalo de contorno de um mapa de contorno é a diferença de elevação entre as linhas de contorno sucessivas. Mais geralmente, uma linha de contorno para uma função de duas variáveis é uma curva de pontos de conexão onde a função tem o mesmo valor particular. O gradiente da função é sempre perpendicular às linhas de contorno. Quando as linhas estão próximas, a magnitude do gradiente é grande: a variação é íngreme. Um conjunto de níveis é uma generalização de uma linha de contorno para funções de qualquer número de variáveis. As linhas de contorno são curvas, retas ou uma mistura de ambas as linhas em um mapa que descreve a interseção de uma superfície real ou hipotética com um ou mais planos horizontais.
