Lateralização da função cerebral
A fissura longitudinal separa o cérebro humano em dois hemisférios cerebrais distintos, conectados pelo corpo caloso. Os hemisférios exibem simetria bilateral forte, mas não completa, tanto em estrutura como em função. Por exemplo, estruturalmente, o sulco lateral geralmente é mais longo no hemisfério esquerdo do que no hemisfério direito e, funcionalmente, a área de Broca e a área de Wernicke estão localizadas no hemisfério cerebral esquerdo por cerca de 95% dos devedores, mas cerca de 70% de esquerdistas. As generalizações amplas são muitas vezes feitas em psicologia popular sobre um lado ou outro com rótulos característicos, como "lógico" para o lado esquerdo ou "criativo" para a direita. Esses rótulos não são suportados por estudos sobre lateralização, uma vez que a lateralização não adiciona uso especializado de nenhum dos hemisférios. Ambos os hemisférios contribuem para ambos os tipos de processos, e as evidências experimentais fornecem pouco suporte para correlacionar as diferenças estruturais entre os lados com diferenças funcionais tão amplamente definidas.
