Tetraethyllead, abreviado TEL, é um composto organolead com a fórmula 4Pb. Foi misturado com a gasolina a partir da década de 1920 como um impulsionador de octanas patenteado que permitiu aumentar substancialmente a compressão do motor, o que, por sua vez, aumentou o desempenho do veículo ou a economia de combustível. O etanol já era conhecido como um amplificador de octano de baixa toxicidade, barato e de baixa toxicidade, mas a TEL foi promovida porque era excepcionalmente lucrativa para os detentores da patente. O TEL foi eliminado a partir dos EUA em meados da década de 1970 devido à sua neurotoxicidade cumulativa e seu efeito prejudicial sobre os conversores catalíticos. Quando presente no combustível, a TEL também é a principal causa da incrustação da vela de ignição. O TEL ainda é usado como aditivo em alguns tipos de gasolina de aviação e em alguns países em desenvolvimento. A Innospec afirmou ser a última empresa que ainda faz o TEL, mas, a partir de 2013, parece ser ilegalmente produzido por várias empresas na China.

Tetraethyllead, abbreviated TEL, is an organolead compound with the formula 4Pb. It was mixed with gasoline beginning in the 1920s as a patented octane booster that allowed engine compression to be raised substantially, which in turn increased vehicle performance or fuel economy. Ethanol was already known as a widely available, inexpensive, low toxicity octane booster, but TEL was promoted because it was uniquely profitable to the patent holders. TEL was phased out starting in the U.S. in the mid-1970s because of its cumulative neurotoxicity and its damaging effect on catalytic converters. When present in fuel, TEL is also the main cause of spark plug fouling. TEL is still used as an additive in some grades of aviation gasoline, and in some developing countries. Innospec has claimed to be the last firm still making TEL, but as of 2013 it appears to also be illegally produced by multiple companies in China.
