A família Chrysomelidae, comumente conhecida como besouros foliares, inclui mais de 35.000 espécies em mais de 2.500 gêneros, tornando-se uma das maiores e mais comumente encontradas em todas as famílias de besouros. Numerosas subfamílias são reconhecidas, mas apenas algumas delas estão listadas abaixo. Os besouros das folhas são parcialmente reconhecíveis pela sua fórmula tarsal, que parece ser 4-4-4, mas na verdade é 5-5-5. Algumas linhagens só se distinguem com dificuldade por besouros de chifres longos, nomeadamente pelas antenas que não surgem de tubérculos frontais. Os besouros de folhas adultas e larvas se alimentam de todo o tipo de tecido vegetal. Muitos são pragas graves de plantas cultivadas, por exemplo, o besouro de batata do Colorado, o escaravelho de aspargos, o besouro de folhas de cereais e vários besouros de pulga, e alguns atuam como vetores de doenças de plantas. Outros são benéficos devido ao seu uso no controle biológico de ervas invasivas. A maioria dos Chrysomelidae são conspicuamente coloridos, tipicamente em matiz azul-verde brilhante amarelo a vermelho ou metálico, e alguns apresentam formas espetacularmente bizarras. Assim, eles são altamente populares entre os coletores de insetos.
