Linear B
Linear B é um script silábico que foi usado para escrever grego de Mycenaean, a primeira forma atestada de grego. O script é anterior ao alfabeto grego por vários séculos. A escrita Mycenaean mais antiga data de cerca de 1450 aC. É descendente do antigo Linear A, um script anterior não decifrado usado para escrever a língua minoense, como é o anterior silábio cipriota, que também gravou grego. O B linear, encontrado principalmente nos arquivos do palácio em Knossos, Cydonia, Pylos, Thebes e Mycenae, desapareceu com a queda da civilização micênea durante o colapso da Idade do Bronze. O período seguinte, conhecido como a Idade das Trevas grega, não fornece evidências do uso da escrita. É também o único dos três "Lineares" a serem decifrados, pelo jovem arquiteto inglês e linguista autodidata, Michael Ventris. A linha linear consiste em cerca de 87 sinais silábicos e mais de 100 sinais ideográficos. Esses ideogramas ou signos "significantes" simbolizam objetos ou mercadorias. Eles não têm valor fonético e nunca são usados como sinais de palavras ao escrever uma frase. A aplicação do Linear B parece ter sido confinada a contextos administrativos.
