Magnetron de cavidade
O magnetron de cavidade é um tubo de vácuo de alta potência que gera microondas usando a interação de um fluxo de elétrons com um campo magnético enquanto se deslocam após uma série de cavidades metálicas abertas. Grupos de elétrons que passam pelas aberturas para as cavidades excitam oscilações de ondas de rádio na cavidade, um pouco semelhante à forma como as cordas de uma guitarra excitam o som em sua caixa de som. A freqüência das microondas produzidas, a freqüência de ressonância, é determinada pelas dimensões físicas das cavidades. Ao contrário de outros tubos de microondas, como o klystron e o tubo de onda, o magnetron não pode funcionar como um amplificador, aumentando a potência de um sinal de microondas aplicado, ele serve apenas como um oscilador, gerando um sinal de microondas a partir de energia de corrente contínua fornecida ao tubo. A primeira forma do tubo de magnetron, o magnetron de ânodo dividido, foi inventada por Albert Hull em 1920, mas não era capaz de altas freqüências e era pouco utilizada. Dispositivos similares foram experimentados por muitas equipes nos anos 20 e 30. O tubo de magnetron da cavidade "ressonante" moderno foi inventado por John Randall e Harry Boot em 1940 na Universidade de Birmingham, na Inglaterra.
