Maronitas
Os maronitas são um grupo etnoreligioso no Levante. Eles derivam o nome do siríaco São Marão, cujos seguidores se mudaram para o Monte Líbano, a partir do norte da Síria, estabelecendo o núcleo da Igreja Maronita. Os maronitas conseguiram manter um status independente no Monte Líbano e seu litoral após a conquista islâmica árabe, mantendo sua religião e idioma até o século 13. Os restos da sua língua existem em Chipre e anteriormente em algumas aldeias de montanha isoladas, que desde então adotaram o árabe devido à padronização do governo. A Igreja Maronita está em comunhão com a Igreja de Roma. O Monte Otomano Líbano Mutasarrifique e, mais tarde, a República do Líbano foi criada sob os auspícios de potências européias com os maronitas como principal componente étnico. A emigração em massa para as Américas no início do século XX e a Guerra Civil Libanesa entre 1975 e 1990 diminuíram muito o número deles no Levante. Os maronitas hoje formam mais de um quarto da população total no país do Líbano. Com apenas duas exceções, todos os presidentes do Líbano e da Grande Libanesa foram Maronitas.
