Microcódigo
Microcode é uma camada de instruções de nível de hardware ou estruturas de dados envolvidas na implementação de instruções de código de máquina de nível superior em unidades de processamento central e na implementação da lógica interna de vários controladores de canais, controladores de disco, controladores de interface de rede, processadores de rede, unidades de processamento de gráficos e outros equipamentos. Ele reside na memória especial de alta velocidade e traduz as instruções da máquina em seqüências de operações detalhadas no nível do circuito. Isso ajuda a separar as instruções da máquina da eletrônica subjacente para que as instruções possam ser projetadas e alteradas de forma mais livre. Também torna viável a construção de instruções multi-etapas complexas, enquanto ainda reduz a complexidade dos circuitos eletrônicos em comparação com outros métodos. Escrever o microcódigo geralmente é chamado de microprogramação e o microcódigo em uma implementação específica do processador às vezes é chamado de microprograma. O microcódigo moderno é normalmente escrito por um engenheiro durante a fase de projeto do processador e armazenado em uma estrutura ROM ou PLA, ou uma combinação de ambos. No entanto, também existem máquinas que possuem algum microcódigo armazenado em SRAM ou memória flash.
