Na computação, a multitarefa é um método onde várias tarefas são realizadas durante o mesmo período de tempo - elas são executadas simultaneamente em vez de seqüencialmente. As tarefas compartilham recursos de processamento comuns, como uma CPU e memória principal. A multitarefa não significa necessariamente que várias tarefas estão sendo executadas exatamente no mesmo instante. Em outras palavras, a multitarefa não implica paralelismo, mas isso significa que mais de uma tarefa pode ser parcial através da execução ao mesmo tempo, e mais de uma tarefa está avançando durante um determinado período de tempo. No caso de um computador com uma única CPU, apenas uma tarefa está sendo executada em qualquer ponto no tempo, o que significa que a CPU está executando ativamente as instruções para essa tarefa. A multitarefa resolve o problema agendando qual tarefa pode ser a que está executando em qualquer momento, e quando outra tarefa em espera recebe uma vez. In computing, multitasking is a method where multiple tasks are performed during the same period of time – they are executed concurrently instead of sequentially. The tasks share common processing resources, such as a CPU and main memory. Multitasking does not necessarily mean that multiple tasks are executing at exactly the same instant. In other words, multitasking does not imply parallelism, but it does mean that more than one task can be part-way through execution at the same time, and more than one task is advancing over a given period of time. In the case of a computer with a single CPU, only one task is said to be running at any point in time, meaning that the CPU is actively executing instructions for that task. Multitasking solves the problem by scheduling which task may be the one running at any given time, and when another waiting task gets a turn. The act of reassigning a CPU from one task to another one is called a context switch. When context switches occur frequently enough, the illusion of parallelism is achieved.
