Peptidoglycan
O peptidoglicano, também conhecido como mureína, é um polímero constituído por açúcares e aminoácidos que forma uma camada de malha fora da membrana plasmática de todas as bactérias, formando a parede celular. O componente de açúcar consiste em resíduos alternados de N-acetilglucosamina e ácido N-acetilmuramico ligado a p. Anexado ao ácido N-acetilmuramico é uma cadeia peptídica de três a cinco aminoácidos. A cadeia peptídica pode ser reticulada à cadeia peptídica de outra cadeia formando a camada em forma de malha 3D. Alguns Archaea têm uma camada similar de pseudopeptidoglicano ou pseudomureína, onde os resíduos de açúcares são N-acetilglucosamina e ácido N-acetiltalosaminurônico ligado a β. É por isso que a parede celular de Archaea é insensível à lisozima. O peptidoglicano serve um papel estrutural na parede celular bacteriana, proporcionando força estrutural, além de contrariar a pressão osmótica do citoplasma. Um equívoco comum é que o peptidoglicano dá à célula a forma; no entanto, enquanto o peptidoglicano ajuda a manter a resistência estrutural da célula, é realmente a proteína MreB que facilita a forma celular.
