Os agentes nervosos são uma classe de substâncias químicas orgânicas contendo fósforo que perturbam o mecanismo pelo qual os nervos transferem mensagens para os órgãos. O envenenamento por um agente nervoso leva a contração de alunos, salivação profusa, convulsões, micção involuntária e defecação e eventual morte por asfixia, uma vez que o controle é perdido sobre os músculos respiratórios. Alguns agentes nervosos são facilmente vaporizados ou aerossolizados e o portal primário de entrada no corpo é o sistema respiratório.
