Doença de Newcastle
A doença de Newcastle é uma doença contagiosa das aves que afeta muitas espécies domésticas e selvagens; é transmissível para os seres humanos. Foi identificado pela primeira vez em Java, Indonésia, em 1926 e em 1927, em Newcastle-upon-Tyne, na Inglaterra. No entanto, pode ter sido prevalente já em 1898, quando uma doença eliminou todas as aves domésticas no noroeste da Escócia. Seus efeitos são mais notáveis nas aves domésticas devido à sua alta susceptibilidade e ao potencial de impactos severos de uma epizootita nas indústrias de aves de capoeira. É endémico para muitos países. A exposição dos seres humanos a aves infectadas pode causar conjuntivite leve e sintomas semelhantes a influenza, mas o vírus da doença de Newcastle, de outra forma, não representa nenhum perigo para a saúde humana. O interesse no uso de NDV como agente anticancerígeno surgiu a partir da capacidade do NDV de matar seletivamente células tumorais humanas com toxicidade limitada para células normais.
