A lei de gravitação universal de Newton afirma que os dois corpos do universo se atraem com uma força diretamente proporcional ao produto de suas massas e inversamente proporcional ao quadrado da distância entre eles. Esta é uma lei física geral derivada de observações empíricas pelo que Isaac Newton chamou de indução. É parte da mecânica clássica e foi formulado no trabalho de Newton Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica, publicado pela primeira vez em 5 de julho de 1687. Na lei moderna, a lei estabelece o seguinte: Assumindo unidades SI, F é medida em newtons, m1 e m2 em quilogramas , r em metros e a constante G é aproximadamente igual a 6,667 × 10-11 N m2 kg-2. O valor da constante G foi primeiro determinado com precisão a partir dos resultados da experiência de Cavendish conduzida pelo cientista britânico Henry Cavendish em 1798, embora Cavendish não calculou um valor numérico para G. Esse experimento também foi o primeiro teste da teoria de Newton de gravitação entre massas no laboratório.
