Em matemática, uma matriz quadrada complexa A é normal se, em que A * é a transposição conjugada de A. Isto é, uma matriz é normal se ela se desloca com sua transposição conjugada. Uma matriz real A satisfaz A * = AT e, portanto, é normal se ATA = AAT. A normalidade é um teste conveniente para a diagonalização: uma matriz é normal se e somente se for similarmente a uma matriz diagonal e, portanto, qualquer matriz A que satisfaça a equação A * A = AA * é diagonalizável. O conceito de matrizes normais pode ser estendido aos operadores normais em espaços infinitos de Hilbert dimensional e aos elementos normais em C * -algebras. Como no caso da matriz, a normalidade significa que a comutatividade é preservada, na medida do possível, na configuração não-comutativa. Isso faz com que operadores normais e elementos normais de C * -algebras sejam mais acessíveis à análise.
