Notochord
O notocórdio é um corpo flexível em forma de haste encontrado em embriões de todos os acordes. É composto de células derivadas do mesoderma e define o eixo primitivo do embrião. Em alguns acordes, ele persiste ao longo da vida como principal suporte axial do corpo, enquanto na maioria dos vertebrados torna-se o núcleo pulposo do disco intervertebral. A notocorda é encontrada ventral ao tubo neural. Notochords foram os primeiros "backbones" que servem como estruturas de apoio em cordas, como Haikouichthys. Os Notocordes eram vantajosos para ancestrais primitivos porque eram uma estrutura rígida para a ligação muscular, ainda que flexível o suficiente para permitir mais movimento do que, por exemplo, o exoesqueleto dos animais dominantes daquele tempo. Os embriões de vertebrados hoje não têm os mesmos segmentos, pois mantêm um papel fundamental na sinalização e na coordenação do desenvolvimento, mesmo que tenha sido perdido na maioria dos adultos. Na maioria dos tetrápodes, eles eventualmente se desenvolvem no núcleo pulposo dos discos intervertebrais.
