Oncogene
Um oncogene é um gene que tem potencial para causar câncer. Nas células tumorais, muitas vezes são mutantes ou expressas em níveis elevados. A maioria das células normais sofre uma forma programada de morte. Os oncogenes ativados podem causar que as células designadas para a apoptose sobrevivam e proliferam em vez disso. A maioria dos oncogenes requer um passo adicional, como mutações em outro gene, ou fatores ambientais, como infecção viral, para causar câncer. Desde a década de 1970, dezenas de oncogenes foram identificados em câncer humano. Muitos fármacos contra o câncer visam as proteínas codificadas por oncogenes.
