Orthotics é uma especialidade no campo médico envolvido com o design, fabricação e aplicação de órteses. Uma órtese é "um dispositivo aplicado externamente usado para modificar as características estruturais e funcionais do sistema neuromuscular e esquelético". Uma órtese pode ser usada para: ▪ Controlar, guiar, limitar e / ou imobilizar um segmento de extremidade, articulação ou corpo por uma razão específica ▪ Para restringir o movimento em uma determinada direção ▪ Para auxiliar o movimento em geral ▪ Para reduzir as forças de peso para um determinado objetivo ▪ Ajudar a reabilitação de fraturas após a remoção de um elenco ▪ Para corrigir a forma e / ou a função do corpo, proporcionar uma capacidade de movimento mais fácil ou reduzir a dor. O Orthotics combina conhecimento de anatomia e fisiologia, fisiopatologia, biomecânica e engenharia. Os pacientes que se beneficiam de uma órtese podem ter uma condição como espinha bífida ou paralisia cerebral, ou sofreram lesão ou acidente vascular cerebral. Do mesmo modo, as órteses às vezes são usadas de forma profilática ou para otimizar o desempenho no esporte.
