Camada de ozônio
A camada de ozônio refere-se a uma região da estratosfera da Terra que absorve a maior parte da radiação UV do Sol. Contém altas concentrações de ozônio em relação a outras partes da atmosfera, embora ainda seja muito pequena em relação a outros gases na estratosfera. A camada de ozônio contém menos de dez partes por milhão de ozônio, enquanto a concentração média de ozônio na atmosfera terrestre como um todo é de apenas 0,3 partes por milhão. A camada de ozônio é encontrada principalmente na parte inferior da estratosfera, de aproximadamente 20 a 30 quilômetros acima da Terra, embora a espessura varie de forma sazonal e geográfica. A camada de ozônio foi descoberta em 1913 pelos físicos franceses Charles Fabry e Henri Buisson. Suas propriedades foram exploradas em detalhes pelo meteorologista britânico G. M. B. Dobson, que desenvolveu um espectrofotômetro simples que poderia ser usado para medir o ozônio estratosférico do solo. Entre 1928 e 1958, a Dobson estabeleceu uma rede mundial de estações de monitoramento de ozônio, que continuam a operar até hoje. A "unidade Dobson", uma medida conveniente da quantidade de sobrecarga de ozônio, é nomeada em sua homenagem.
