Em uma mistura de gases, cada gás tem uma pressão parcial que é a pressão hipotética desse gás, se ele ocupasse sozinho o volume da mistura à mesma temperatura. A pressão total de uma mistura de gás ideal é a soma das pressões parciais de cada gás individual na mistura. Baseia-se na seguinte relação de isotérmica: ▪ Vx é o volume parcial de cada componente de gás individual ▪ Vtot é o volume total na mistura de gás ▪ px é a pressão parcial do gás X ▪ ptot é a pressão total da mistura de gás ▪ nx é a quantidade de substância de um gás ▪ ntot é a quantidade total de substância na mistura de gás A pressão parcial de um gás é uma medida da atividade termodinâmica das moléculas do gás. Os gases dissolvem, difundem e reagem de acordo com suas pressões parciais, e não de acordo com suas concentrações em misturas de gases ou líquidos. Esta propriedade geral dos gases também é verdadeira das reações químicas dos gases na biologia. Por exemplo, a quantidade necessária de oxigênio para a respiração humana, e a quantidade que é tóxica, é definida pela pressão parcial do oxigênio sozinho.
