A patologia (das raízes gregas antigas do pathos (πάθος), que significa "experiência" ou "sofrimento", e -logia (-λογία), "uma conta de") é um componente significativo do estudo causal da doença e um campo principal na prática médica moderna e no diagnóstico. O termo patologia em si pode ser usado amplamente para se referir ao estudo da doença em geral, incorporando uma ampla gama de campos de pesquisa de biociências e práticas médicas, ou mais estreitamente para descrever o trabalho no campo médico contemporâneo da "patologia geral", que inclui uma número de especialidades médicas distintas, mas inter-relacionadas, que diagnosticam a doença principalmente através da análise de amostras de tecido, células e fluidos corporais. Usado como um substantivo comum, "uma patologia" (plural - "patologias" ou "pathoses") também pode se referir à progressão prevista ou real de doenças específicas (como na afirmação "as muitas formas diferentes de câncer possuem patologias diversas") e o prefixo "path-" às vezes é usado para indicar um estado de doença em casos de doença física (como na cardiomiopatia) e condições psicológicas (como a psicopatia). Um médico que pratica patologia é chamado de patologista.
