Um código criminal é um documento que compila tudo, ou uma quantidade significativa, de uma lei penal de jurisdição particular. Normalmente, um código penal conterá infrações reconhecidas na jurisdição, penalidades que podem ser impostas por essas infrações e algumas disposições gerais. Os códigos criminais são relativamente comuns em jurisdições de direito civil, que tendem a construir sistemas legais em torno de códigos e princípios que são relativamente abstratos e aplicá-los caso a caso. Por outro lado, são raras nas jurisdições de direito comum. A introdução proposta de um código criminal na Inglaterra e no País de Gales foi um projeto significativo da Comissão de Direito de 1968 a 2008. Devido à forte tradição de precedente na jurisdição e, conseqüentemente, ao grande número de julgamentos vinculativos e às "ações comuns de direito comum" ambíguas, bem como a natureza muitas vezes inconsistente do direito inglês - a criação de um código satisfatório tornou-se muito difícil. O projeto foi oficialmente abandonado em 2008, embora a partir de 2009 tenha sido revivido. Nos Estados Unidos, existe um Código Penal Modelo que não é lei, mas que fornece a base para o direito penal de muitos estados.

A criminal code is a document which compiles all, or a significant amount of, a particular jurisdiction's criminal law. Typically a criminal code will contain offences which are recognised in the jurisdiction, penalties which might be imposed for these offences and some general provisions. Criminal codes are relatively common in civil law jurisdictions, which tend to build legal systems around codes and principles which are relatively abstract and apply them on a case by case basis. Conversely they are rare in common law jurisdictions. The proposed introduction of a criminal code in England and Wales was a significant project of the Law Commission from 1968 to 2008. Due to the strong tradition of precedent in the jurisdiction and consequently the large number of binding judgements and ambiguous 'common law offences', as well as the often inconsistent nature of English law - the creation of a satisfactory code became very difficult. The project was officially abandoned in 2008 although as of 2009 it has been revived. In the United States a Model Penal Code exists which is not itself law but which provides the basis for the criminal law of many states.
