Úlcera péptica
Uma úlcera péptica é uma violação distinta no revestimento da mucosa do estômago ou na primeira parte do intestino delgado, resultado dos efeitos cáusticos do ácido e da pepsina no lúmen. Histologicamente, a úlcera péptica é identificada como necrose da mucosa que produz lesões iguais ou superiores a 0,5 cm. É a úlcera mais comum de uma área do trato gastrointestinal que geralmente é acidental e, portanto, extremamente dolorosa. Helicobacter pylori é uma das causas mais comuns de úlcera péptica. As úlceras também podem ser causadas ou pioradas por drogas como aspirina, ibuprofeno e outros AINEs. Quatro vezes mais úlceras pépticas surgem no duodeno - a primeira parte do intestino delgado, logo além do estômago - como no próprio estômago. Cerca de 4% das úlceras gástricas são causadas por um tumor maligno, então são necessárias biópsias múltiplas para excluir o câncer. As úlceras duodenais são geralmente benignas. A aparência de uma úlcera pode ser a úlcera erosiva, côncava, cratera clássica ou convexa, talvez parecida com um pólipo colônico. Como generalização, o tipo côncavo erosivo tende a estar localizado no estômago propriamente dito, enquanto o tipo convexo tende a ser encontrado no píloro / duodeno.
