O filito é um tipo de rocha metamórfica foliada criada a partir de ardósia que é ainda metamorfoseada, de modo que a mica branca muito fina produz uma orientação preferida. É composto principalmente de quartzo, mica de sericita e clorito. O filito possui flocos de mica de grão fino numa orientação preferida, enquanto que a ardósia possui flocos de argila extremamente finos que conseguem uma orientação preferida e o xisto tem grandes flocos numa orientação preferida. Entre as rochas metamórficas foliadas, representa uma gradação no grau de metamorfismo entre a ardósia e o xisto. Os cristais minúsculos de grafite, sericita ou clorito, ou a mica branca translúcida de grão fino, conferem um brilho sedoso, às vezes dourado, às superfícies de clivagem, chamado "brilho filosótico". A palavra vem do phyllon grego, que significa "folha". O protolito para filito é xisto ou pelite, ou ardósia, que por sua vez veio de um protolito de xisto. Seus minerais constituídos de platy são maiores do que aqueles em ardósia, mas não são visíveis a olho nu.
