Physalia
Physalia é um gênero da ordem Siphonophora, colônias de quatro pólipos especializados e medusoides que flutuam na superfície dos oceanos Atlântico, Índico e Pacífico. Uma bexiga cheia de gás que se assemelha a uma garrafa azul fornece flutuabilidade e longos tentáculos de cnidócitos venenosos fornecem um meio de capturar presas. Uma vela no flutuador, que pode ser esquerda ou direita, propõe a Physalia sobre o mar, muitas vezes em grupos. Os indivíduos às vezes ficam encalhados nas praias, onde seus nematocistos tóxicos podem permanecer potentes por semanas ou meses em condições úmidas. A espécie Physalia utriculus recebe o nome comum do Pacific Man o 'War para distingui-lo da Physalia physalis mais amplamente distribuída e maior, o homem de guerra portuguesa. As espécies são repartidas pelo tamanho do flutuador e por ter um único contra vários longos tentáculos de pesca. Nenhuma fatalidade da envenenação é registrada para P. útriculus, em contraste com as espécies maiores. O gênero foi descrito pela primeira vez por Jean-Baptiste Lamarck em 1801.
