Nove famílias de aves predominantemente arbóreas compõem a ordem dos Piciformes, sendo os mais conhecidos os Picídeos, que incluem pica-pinos e parentes próximos. Os Piciformes contêm cerca de 67 gêneros vivos com pouco mais de 400 espécies, das quais os Picídeos compõem a metade. Em geral, os Piciformes são insetívoros, embora os barbets e toucans comam principalmente frutas e as guias de mel são únicas entre os pássaros ao serem capazes de digerir a cera de abelha. Quase todos os Piciformes têm pés de zigodactil de papagaio, dois dedos para frente e dois para trás, um arranjo que tem vantagens óbvias para os pássaros que passam grande parte do tempo em troncos de árvores. Uma exceção são algumas espécies de pica-paus de três dedos. Os jacamares de lado, os Piciformes não têm penas baixas a qualquer idade, apenas penas verdadeiras. Eles variam em tamanho da Piculet Rufous com 8 centímetros de comprimento e pesam 7 gramas, ao Toco Toucan, com 63 centímetros de comprimento e pesando 680 gramas. Todos aninham em cavidades e têm jovens altricionais.
